What it is
The blower is what actually pushes conditioned air through your ducts. The compressor can be perfectly healthy and you will still feel nothing at the vents.
What you would notice
- No air at all from any vent while the outdoor unit runs
- Squealing or grinding from the indoor unit
- The blower runs only sometimes, or only on some speeds
- A burning smell from the vents
Can you do this yourself?
Pay a professional
It lives inside the air handler behind panels that are awkward for a reason, and modern variable-speed motors carry a control module that has to be programmed to the system. Not a homeowner job.
What to say when you call
Red flags
- A full air handler replacement quoted for a motor failure
- No distinction drawn between the motor and its module
The call-out alone runs $100–$250 before any work, plus $40–80/hr on top, evenings and weekends. A whole new system is $3,800–$7,500 — compare every quote to that.
Where these numbers come from
- Angi, HVAC repair cost guide — blower motor $200–700 installed
Did it turn out to be this?
Nobody has ever published how often an AC call turns out to be something cheap — the best figure available anywhere is one company's marketing page. So we are building it. No account, no email, and your ZIP is cut to three digits before it is sent.
