What it is

The compressor is the heart of the system and the single most costly component in it. On an older system, a failed compressor is usually the moment the maths tips toward replacement.

What you would notice

  • A loud clunk or a hard shudder on start-up
  • The outdoor unit hums but nothing turns, and the capacitor has already been ruled out
  • The breaker trips whenever the compressor tries to start
  • No cooling at all despite good airflow and correct refrigerant charge

Red flags

  • A compressor quote on a 12-year-old system with no replacement comparison offered
  • Nobody checking the warranty — many carry 10-year parts coverage the original owner never registered
