What it is
A new condenser, coil and usually an air handler. Worth knowing as a number even when you are not replacing anything, because it is what makes a $400 capacitor quote obviously absurd and a $2,800 compressor quote genuinely arguable.
What you would notice
- The system is over 12–15 years old and needs a major component
- A repair quote exceeding roughly a third of replacement cost
- It still uses R-22, which is no longer produced
- Repeated repairs across consecutive summers
